New States and Union Territories created after 1956

  • Despite the reorganization of the states in 1956, the pressure to form new states increased, due to language and other reasons, there was a demand for the creation of new states from other states
  • Maharashtra and Gujarat

  • The bilingual state of Bombay was divided into two separate states in 1960 Maharashtra for Marathi speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati speaking people Gujarat was the 15th state of the Indian Union.
  • Dadar and Nagar Haveli - Portugal ruled here before it became independent in 1954 Till 1961. the self- elected administration continued here. It was converted into a Union Territory by the 10th Constitution Amendment Act 1961.
  • Goa, Daman and Diu -These three areas were acquired in India through police action in 1961, they were established as Union Territories by the 12th Constitution Amendment Act, 1962 Later in 1987, Goa was made a full-fledged state. Similarly, Daman and Diu was made a separate union territory.
  • The region of Puducherry - Puducherry was a form of former French formation, known in India as Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yemen.
  • In 1954 France handed it over to India. Thus, till 1962, its administration continued as an acquired territory. It was then made a Union Territory by the 14th Constitution Amendment Act 1962.
